Clintonville Farmers' Market Goes to Italy's Terra Madre as a Food Community

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Market given honor of 3 delegates, out of 400 nationwide, to international conference.
  • New and expanded CFM Web site to debut by month's end.

On Sept 21, the Clintonville Farmers' Market will "start the clock" with 30 days left to the October 21 opening of Terra Madre in Torino, Italy.  In a competitive application process this summer, Slow Food USA awarded Clintonville Farmers' Market 3 delegate positions (of only 400 in US) to the international, biennial Slow Food Terra Madre Conference in Turin (Torino), Italy.

Attending the 4-day conference along with delegates from 132 countries will be market founder, Lynne Genter; market manager, Laura Zimmerman; and market farmer and board member, Therese Posten.  They will take a composite of images and comments from the Clintonville Farmers' Market food community: farmers/producers, customers, market chefs and entertainers, and market neighbors.  The three will return to Clintonville with experiences about similar food communities throughout the world.

The mission of the non-profit Clintonville Farmers' Market is to create a venue where market patrons can meet the farmers who grow their food and to educate the patrons about the benefits of locally-grown produce and products.  The outdoor, seasonal (May-Nov) Clintonville Farmers' Market is in its 8th season.  The market has doubled square footage, producers, and customer traffic in the last 2 years.  And, to better communicate with the Clintonville community, the market will be debuting a new and expanded Web site over the next month.

Slow Food, a non-profit with over 100,000 members worldwide, was founded in 1989 to "counteract fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world."  About its biennial conference, Slow Food says,

Terra Madre is an international network of food producers, cooks, educators and students from 150 countries who are united by a common goal of global sustainability in food. The "food communities" of Terra Madre come together biennially to share innovative solutions and time-honored traditions for keeping small-scale agriculture and sustainable food production alive and well.......Today the Terra Madre network includes 2,000 food communities representing over 300,000 small-scale farmers in 153 countries, plus 1,000 cooks, 500 academics, and 1,000 youth, commited to establishing a good, clean and fair food system for all. Day by day this vast network is impacting the lives of over 1 million people through its activities and values.

This year will mark the fourth world meeting of food communities in Turin, Italy. From October 21-25...
