Farmers market soon will cede to Winter Wednesdays

Michelle White won't have much time between wrapping up the regular Clintonville Farmers Market and gearing up for the new Winter Wednesday Market.

"The good news is that we don't have much of a break between the end of the season and the winter market," said White, who now serves as manager for both. "I think we have a week and a half off.

"It's always sad to say goodbye to that season, but we're hoping the Winter Wednesdays are a hit with the community."

The Saturday season comes to a close Saturday, Nov. 23, with the annual pre-Thanksgiving Harvest Market. It runs from 9 a.m. to noon on North High Street between Orchard Lane and West Dunedin Road.

The market will feature Ohio-grown fall fruit and vegetables, pasture-raised meats, eggs, cheeses, grains, beans, mushrooms, artisan breads, baked goods, locally roasted coffees, maple syrup, honey, jams, flowers, wood products and fibers, according to a press release.

Holiday and gift items such as sweet potato pies, molded beeswax candles, relish and jam gift sets and wool products also will be available.

A chef from Alana's Food and Wine in the University District will prepare a batch of the traditional "stone soup" using ingredients from the food vendors on hand.

This weekend's event ends the 11th season for the Clintonville Farmers Market, White's first as manager.

She took over in July from Laura Zimmerman, who stepped down after eight years in the post to move to China with her husband and their 11-year-old son, whom they adopted from that country.

This season marked the first year of a partnership with the Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resources Center to bring more local senior citizens to the market, and the second year of holding midweek summer markets from June to August.

The winter market, which White managed in its inaugural season in January, returns on a new day and in a new location Dec. 4.

"That was basically to try to pick up pre-Christmas traffic," White said.

The seasonal market will be at Global Gallery, 3535 N. High St., in the vicinity of the Saturday gatherings.

"We're hoping that keeping our same location year-round will increase visibility and attendance at the winter market this year," White said.

The winter market runs from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 4, 11 and 18, takes a hiatus for the holidays and returns Jan. 8 to continue through April 16.

The focus of the market will be on community gathering and seasonal eating, with locally harvested organic dinner plates, hot cider and other seasonal specials offered by Global Gallery, White said.

Available fresh produce will include head lettuces, hardy greens, apples and mushrooms; artisan breads, jams and pasture-raised meats also will be available.

"It's coming along," White said last week. "We have a lot of the same people from last year, but we also have two more producers of crops, which is exciting."

She added 11 vendors have signed up, but there is space for two more.
