The 13th season for the market, which stretches along North High Street between Orchard Land and West Dunedin Road, will be marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. Wielding the oversized scissors will be Columbus Health Commissioner Dr. Teresa Long, assisted by City Council President Andrew J. Ginther, a Clintonville resident, said market manager Michelle White.

Also on hand for the ceremony will be Clintonville Area Commission members Daniel B. Miller and Dana Bagwell.

The launch of the new season will coincide with the annual Spring Sprout Day, with seed plants and "awesome greens" available to shoppers, White said last week.Baja Clintonville Broadcasters, a local band that has performed during the market's opening day for the past two years, will return, playing from 9:30 to 11 a.m.The market's hours are 9 a.m. to noon.

Those who attend opening day are asked to bring canned food to be donated to the Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resource Center's pantry."The message behind that is trade in your canned goods for fresh spring produce from the market," White said.

Opening day will feature 36 vendors on-site, she added. "That's about the same from last year." Eventually, as more and more produce and other foods become available, the market will feature is maximum of 46 spaces.

Five full-time vendors from last year have retired or are taking 2015 off, the manager said, but in February, officials began sorting through 75 applicants to fill those slots and find the right mix of products. "Then it's just a matter of putting the puzzle pieces together," White said. "It's a delicate balance. We can accept more people and there's a waiting list, but we try to keep a variety at the market. It's all about...recruiting what the board sees as producers who are going to be in line with our mission."

The mission is to "support excellent growers and producers while nurturing community appreciation of wholesome local foods in a lively neighborhood setting," according to the market's website.

The run-up to opening day is a hectic period, White said, what with ensuring parking arrangements are in place and on-site business owners and managers are made aware of the impending start to the season.
